The Fires of Greece

Dark Mother Hekate, Keeper of the Keys of the Cosmos, Soul of the World...

Where do You come from? That can be a deep theological question about how any of the Holy Ones originate. Even on a smaller scale, though, we can recognize deities "coming from" whatever land and culture where the people first seemed to be aware and develop relationships. In that way, there are still many questions about where You come from.

You are most widely known as a Greek deity. Worshipped in the Hellenic city-state cultures. You are known as a Titaness who chose the side of the Olympians in their battles against Kronos and other Titans. It is said that even Zeus honors You. As I say in my prayers, "Honored art thou amongst the godden". We have so many questions about who may have known You before the Hellenes because it is from them and their Greek descendants that the rest of the world has come to know You.

I think of having learned that I have that one thread of Greek ancestry. I wonder if any of my ancestors were among Your most devoted worshippers. Has my becoming a devotee been a return, or has it built over the ages? Did they pay proper respect to You at proper times and in proper ways, but no more than that? Did they call for Your help when I most needed it? Did they place the keys along my path all the way through to lead me to You?

There are so many questions. Why am I asking them now? Not to seek answers. Not today. Today, it is to give my attention to Greece. Greece needs healing. So many tales of myth and folklore, so much of the arts, so much guidance from the philosophers and the social structures, so much...everything! Greece has given so much to the world. Not always in the ways things should be given, but that is true of many peoples. We are such simple beings compared to You and other Shining Ones. We are also much more complex than we understand about ourselves. Greece does not have a perfect history. And I know just what that history is can even depend on who is looking at it. There may be things I think we, as humans, should be ashamed of and learn better, and maybe the same thing pleased You at the time or simply doesn't matter nearly as much as we humans think.

I bring this up because I ask that You cover Greece with Your grace and mercy. Whatever may be in the history that would count for them to be left on their own now, I ask You to mercifully not count it. Whatever in their history might be lacking so that they might not be worth the attention now that they were then, I ask You to give them Your guidance. I don't understand how these things work on larger levels - whole countries over long spans of human history - but I know things are very different now than they were then. And I know they need You.
